We must not succumb to this paralysis. The "impossibility" demonstrated by the paper is merely the negation of the conventional model of individual accountability. This article argues why Responsibility Engineering is not merely one option among many, but logically the sole implementation solution derived from structural necessity.

1. The Trilemma Presented by the Paper
Let us revisit the premise established in arXiv:2601.15059. After identifying the Responsibility Vacuum (the divergence of Authority and Capacity where G exceeds H), the authors present a stark set of remaining pathways. The paper concludes that we are forced to select from exactly three options:
Constrain Throughput (Limit G to match H)
Aggregate Responsibility (Shift from individual decisions to system-wide liability)
Accept Autonomy (Tolerate the absence of responsibility as an operational risk)
Crucially, any other hypothetical panaceas—such as "humans trying harder" or "AI self-accountability"—are structurally precluded.
2. Responsibility Engineering as the Architecture of Choice
Responsibility Engineering does not impose an arbitrary philosophy. It is the translation of the paper's three abstract options into concrete system specifications. We implement these not as moral guidelines, but as the three Boundaries. The correspondence reveals the inevitability of this approach.
The Stop Boundary: Implementing Constraint
The Stop Boundary acts as the implementation of Option 1 (Throughput Constraint). Rather than relying on soft operational rules, we implement a hard stop triggered by monitoring the G/H threshold. If one rejects Responsibility Engineering (boundary design via pre-commitment), the only remaining path is to rely on Post-hoc Explanation or increased individual effort. However, as Romanchuk & Bondar proved, in the G > H regime, both post-hoc verification and individual diligence degrade into empty Rituals.
In other words, the path of solving this through "operations" is physically foreclosed. The only viable path is to burn the conditions under which responsibility holds—and does not hold—into the system before it operates. We call this Design.

The reason Responsibility Engineering successfully addresses the Responsibility Vacuum is simple. It works because it abandons the structurally impossible attempt to "fill" the vacuum, and instead adopts an approach that redefines the vacuum as an integral component of the system architecture.
The limit demonstrated by the paper is not an end point. It is the genesis of a new engineering discipline. It is the technique for sustaining systems in a world where we have proven that traditional responsibility cannot hold. That is Responsibility Engineering.
